Day 5. Akerreta to Villava

We had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Akerreta, such a nice change to have real towels instead of the light, fast absorbent REI towels we have been using.  We walked to Zabaldica to pick up my backpack with the intention of staying there tonight.  However, the nun told us that since we had walked only 7 km. we had to continue walking because with the closure of alburgue Lorrasoana the priority was for pilgrims who were starting out much farther than us.

Given no choice, I was forced to carry my backpack since I could not have it delivered.  I carried it for about 4 km. in scorching heat.  It was agony but I survived.  I had been having it sent to the next destination to build up my legs first and give it a week before I built up my back!

Dinners are always fun.  We choose the Pilgrims menu.  Tonight it was 8 euros for soup, fried turkey or fish, and a dessert.  Wine is also included.  We sit together with other pilgrims.  At our table tonight were Germans and Australians.
