Day 31. Calzadilla de Los Hermanillos to Mansilla de las Mulas. 24.5 km.

The hotel last night was very nice, the room was big and the bathroom too.  It is such a treat to be out of the alburgues and not sharing a room with 20 people.

The hotel guests were mostly French so it was such a change that we the Americans and the English couple had to sit back and be out of the conversation.  We ordered pulpa, squid, which was awful.  However the French ate all theirs so must have liked them.

The walk today was hard because the road was rocky and we started late and so walked during the afternoon heat.  It was warmer today and my right knee was sore as well as my left.

We found shelter, a concrete hut with a makeshift seat, and ate our lunch and soon was joined by an Irish girl, Sinead.   We shared our bread and cheese and got a treat in exchange, chocolate and nuts!  Earlier we had walked a bit with Sophie who started in Paris.  She has been walking for two months.  Today was her birthday so we sang to her as we walked.

We saw very few pilgrims today, less than 10 because this was the longer route.

With the long walk, the heat, and my two sore knees I was pretty grumpy.  We were low in water and finally arrived in Reliogos, a small town where  we got some water, bought juice and ice cream and called a cab.  We had 8 more km. but I was done.  I had walked about 17 km. with two sore knees.  I took a cab for 5 euros to the next town where we were staying and Dick continued to walk.  He is determined to walk the whole way and carry his pack even though I could have taken it in the cab.  He says he is training for the Pacific Crest trail!

We had a fun dinner with about 20 pilgrims and met my first Lithuanian pilgrim.

Tomorrow we are off to Leon and the parador.  Am looking forward to resting.

We followed this Roman trail even though longer than an alternative route because Dick is really into all the historical facts, artifacts, etc.  He likes the idea of walking the same roads taken by the Ceasars!

A hard walk because there was no shade, or water and the dirt road was rocky.  It was also a bit warmer than yesterday.
