Marylou arrived on my birthday at 10 a.m. And we were off running to see the sites. We took the famous tram 28 and it took us uphill on skinny windy roads and we got off by the castle stop. We ran into the Canadian foursome we had met the night before at the seafood restaurant. We sat next to their table and they warned us to be precise with our order as they ended up paying a 180€ meal they had not expected to pay. We ordered Shrimps and clams and it was delicious. Our bill was over €30.
The castle, like all the monuments we have seen are massive, and impressive.
We took tram 15 to Belem and what was suppose to take 15 minutes took much longer. A young local helped us navigate. She got off at the same place and pointed to us where to go and where to catch the bus back.
Belem is the harbor where the Portuguese explorers left from and returned. The Torre de Belem is the last thing they see and first one to see when they return. Vasco de Gama is buried in the massive Monasterio de Jeroinimo.
We walked a lot and accumulated almost 20,000 steps. This is the most I have logged since following it on my IPhone. We did not leave Belen until we had stopped at the very famous bakery where Pastais de Belem is made. Since it was already 7 pm. There were no lines, otherwise the lines are long every day.
We ended the day back at our neighborhood restaurant, highly recommended by Adrian, to celebrate my birthday.
